Module 8: Financial Models for Scholarly Journals

A journal is only sustainable if it can continue to operate – and a large consideration is the financial model that underpins the journal and how sustainable the journal’s existence and its future development are. This module looks at the finances of managing a journal. It will consider why editors need to be aware of the financial workings of a journal, and consider the costs that journal publishing will incur, and how these can be supported.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you will:

  • Understand the need for financial awareness and planning
  • Be able to evaluate and minimise costs
  • Ensure that a realistic financial plan is in place
  • Select the best financial support and publishing model for your journal

I think green open access publishing (witch we are using in our journal) is a model that will not survive. Moving to gold open access will be a wise decision.
